Yes, Scrubs!
Let's bring 'em back.
I’ll say it: I love a good scrub. Sadly, facial scrubs get a bad rap. I don’t want to point fingers, but I think a collective memory of a certain early aughts scrub might had something to do with it. While it’s true many scrubs can be too harsh for sensitive facial skin, I think there’s a happy medium between effective and gentle that is totally possible to meet.
For me, there’s a time and a place for physical exfoliation. Coincidentally, that time is now and the place is here. Summer skin gets sticky, sweaty, and layered with product and sunscreen buildup. A great weekly scrub takes all of that off with ease — and there’s truly nothing more satisfying than massaging all the gunk off your face to reveal soft, smooth skin beneath.
With scrubs, the key is finding the right product and using it purposefully. Below, a simple guide to sloughing off dead skin for your softest skin yet.
Find the Right Formula
The best scrubs are gentle, yet effective. Look for formulas that include hydrating ingredients, as scrubs can be drying. If you have acne-prone skin, you’ll always want to run your products through the Non-Comedogenic Ingredient Checker to make sure they’re not making any existing problems worse.
Separate Your Actives
Scrubs are considered active treatments, so you should keep your routine simple on the days you scrub. Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser, scrub after, and then apply an extra hydrating moisturizer to help support your freshly scrubbed skin. Wait until the following day (or more if your skin feels sensitive) to apply retinol or any other strong active in your routine.
Avoid If Your Skin Is Acting Up
If you’re experiencing inflammatory acne, open cuts, or sensitivity, skip the scrub. If your skin is already feeling sensitive, you don’t want to irritate it, even with the gentlest scrub. Go with something like Mandelic Acid instead and focus on supporting your skin.
Shameless plug: we made the return of scrubs easy by making the perfect one for you. It’s based on our in-studio microdermabrasion treatment and you can get it right here.
Any questions? You know where to find me. Now, let’s bring back scrubs’ good name.
